Chapter Eight

Abby climbed the front steps of Jack’s house late on Monday afternoon. It was a gorgeous day. She loved feeling the summer heat on her bare skin. Loved the prospect of two-and-a-half months of long, sunny days ahead, with the freedom to sleep late, work when she wanted to and dress as she pleased.

She raised her hand to knock, chickened out and took a deep breath to steady herself. Darn it, she was being ridiculous again. And lately, every time she felt this way, Jack Granger was involved. She’d spent all day Sunday and most of today trying to forget that scorching, heart-stopping, mind-bending kiss she’d shared with him.

Fat chance of that ever happening.

With Jack, the surprises just kept on coming. Every time she thought she had him figured out, he did something she never would have expected. She certainly hadn’t expected him to be a world-class kisser.

Even thinking about that kiss made her lips tingle, her skin feel hot and tight and her toes want to curl. He’d sensed exactly what she’d wanted before she’d known she wanted it. The right pressure, the right angle, the right time to use his tongue, the right way to use it…. Everything about it had been right, which probably meant either that she had imagined how perfect it had been or that it had been a once-in-a-lifetime fluke that never would happen again.

But what if it hadn’t been a fluke? What if she hadn’t imagined anything? What if he kissed like that all the time?

Lord, when he’d pulled her against him and she’d felt his hardness, she was lucky she hadn’t just melted into a puddle of need right there on the walkway in front of her apartment. Her guardian angel must have been perched on her shoulder, or she never would have found the strength to stop him before she’d made a complete fool of herself. And if she didn’t stop thinking about it right now, she was liable to learn more about spontaneous combustion than she really wanted to know.

“So get on with it,” she muttered to herself. “He’s not home yet. You probably won’t even see him today.”

But what if she did?

How would she feel? What would she say? Was there a single hope in the universe that she wouldn’t give away what a fraud she was? Telling him she was attracted to him but didn’t want to get involved because of her plans! As if she could turn off her feelings like a TV or a CD player, for pity’s sake. She couldn’t believe how easily he’d bought her explanations.

And just why had he bought them so easily? She couldn’t figure that out at all. He seemed like a man who didn’t give up when he really wanted something. So maybe he hadn’t really wanted her that much. Oh, yes, he had. She’d felt the evidence. So to speak.

Now that she thought about it, the least he could have done was try to kiss her again. But oh, no, he’d been Mr.
