"Well, this is a pleasant surprise."

"Hello, Gizela. I came to see how you're settling in."

Abram glanced around the chamber as he spoke, then moved to take a seat on a natural bend in the rock near the corridor entrance that was the right height for it. The pool Gizela lounged in was lit from below with a soft bluish radiance he knew was from a special sort of fungus she'd requested. Sif had gotten it for her ... before.

The entire chamber they were in was only thirty feet in diameter, and aside from the place where Abram sat there was very little dry space. The back wall curved smoothly up out of the pool to a height of about ten feet in the center of the room, and it was cozy enough that the light from the water was sufficient to illuminate the space, though ripples cast weird distortions everywhere.

"Lies. Pleasant to hear, but lies all the same."

Gizela smiled dreamily at him as she couched her cheek on her forearm, looking up from the rim of her pool, which was perhaps six feet from where he sat. Her hair was matted and clung to her shoulders. He couldn't see much beyond her face, yet she radiated an unmistakable sensual allure.

As he considered her, Abram found himself wondering why he had come. It had been weeks since he'd seen the rusalka and she rarely, if ever, left her pool. "Oh, she and I both like to talk, that's all," Gizela said with an easy smile. "She talks about her kids, I talk about my lovers, and we both remember the way things used to be. Reminiscence is a powerful addiction, Mountain King. The older one gets, the more powerful that addiction becomes."

"You don't look a day over twenty-five," Abram said with a grin.

Gizela laughed delightedly and her shoulders shook with it as she grinned at him.

"And you look older than your years, unless I miss my guess," she said wryly. "Your sort of man always ages rapidly."

Abram didn't take his hood down despite what was obviously an invitation to do so. Gizela was guessing. She had never seen his face. Instead, he shrugged and said, "I've been used hard and put away wet too many times to deny that."

Gizela's eyes took on a speculative cast and she nodded. "Angrboda told me about your time with the hobgoblins. I am not so cruel in my use of men as they."

"No, though I would not wish for your end any more than I'd wish for theirs."

"You would, Mountain King, if you knew the truth of things," she said, her smile now quiet and knowing. "There
