Leo

Leo had stayed by his mother’s side, a wicked archangel, for centuries—all to keep his little brother, Corinth, safe. In the past, distinguishing between good and evil had seemed much more straightforward.

That’s why he knew something was highly off-putting about the Shade standing before him.

Ari was not entirely a Shade, but a half of one … or half of … something. It was as if Ari hadn’t completely lost all his humanity. Gold veins traced lines up and down his arms and the sides of his neck. Other Shades he’d seen had silver lines. Strange. Of course, Ari still had that shiny, onyx-colored skin, and bald head like the rest.

Leo stood at full height, much taller than Ari, his arms crossed. He glowered at the Shade, formerly known as Peter Taylor. Demons and Shades were immoral, wicked, vile creatures that couldn’t be trusted.

But he was forced to trust this one now.

The desert was dotted with towering saguaros, prickly cacti, and red rock cliffs. There were no traces of human settlements for miles around. This could be a trap. This was a trap.

“You wanted to meet alone in the Sonoran Desert for a reason,” Leo said. “I don’t mind the heat, but make this quick, Pete.”

“Call me Ari.” The Shade’s voice was a low hiss. “I used to like deserts—minimal population. Striking colors. Solitude. Hiking. It takes a special person to survive and thrive in such a place. Nature picks everything clean here.”

“Okay, Ari. You asked for this meeting.” Leo spread his arms wide, glancing around at the dry landscape. “Stop stalling.”

“I know where the demon is, the one who escaped.” A slow, cruel smile spread across the Shade’s face.

Leo perked up at hearing that. “Where is it?”

“It?” Ari laughed derisively. “You act like he doesn’t resemble a human in every possible way. We all sin, Leo. Lucifer was once a beautiful angel, you know.” He inclined his head, gesturing with his chin toward the area behind Leo. “Oh, and it is right behind you.”

The hairs on Leo’s neck stood on end, warning him of the danger a moment too late.

He spun around.

A demon stood about thirty yards behind Leo at the cliff’s edge. The earth was charred under his feet, forming a large crater. Although it looked like a man in his early twenties, Leo knew it was anything but. The greater demon had dark, wavy blonde hair, freckles, blue eyes, and light skin. Precisely what the kid next door might look like—pleasant, respectable, and likable. Except for the blood-red suit and wing-tipped shoes it wore, and the sword with a lion’s head handle in its grip.

Leo sucked in a sharp breath.

He knew this weapon was meant only for the strongest angels—an original archangel. The last time he’d seen something this powerful was the Holy Lance.

Calling forth lightning, power surged through Leo’s body as he harnessed his grace. He raised his arm to unleash a devastating blast that would obliterate the creature before him.

But a sudden, sharp pain pierced his back.
