Beware the Wolf

London Bailey raced through the graveyard as fast as his eleven-year-old legs could carry him. Headstones, blank grave markers and giant tombs were little more than grey blurs as they rushed past the sprinting young boy. London wasn’t much of a runner as a rule, but rules can be bent when massive, man-eating things are trying to kill you.

London leapt an open grave and stole a look over his shoulder at the hulking, angry beast that chased after him. “So that’s what a werewolf looks like,” he thought to himself, more calmly than is probably reasonable for a child being hunted by a mythical monster.

The werewolf easily jumped the six-foot deep pit as well, and was gaining on London, the youngest monster hunter in the known world. The evil creature slashed at its prey, tearing a chunk of leather from London’s favorite coat.

London shouted backward, “I’ll bill you for that!” He then retrieved a small, glass jar of grease from his leather satchel and smashed it on the ground behind him as he ran. This is the sort of thing you carry when you get chased a lot.

The wolf hit the grease, lost his footing and smashed into a nearby tree. It bought London some time.

London wasn’t looking for a fight on this night; he just wanted to watch a football game. But this particular wolf had been snacking on teenagers under the bleachers and someone had to stop him. So, only a few minutes before, London had made a point to wander away from the crowd and look delicious. Within seconds the beast was chasing him.

London faked left and then zagged hard right, cutting through a section of the graveyard dedicated to soldiers who died in the American Revolutionary War. All of these plots were marked with white marble crosses. “If only I were being chased by a vampire,” he thought, “these crosses would be very useful.”

London tried to remember everything he knew about werewolves. Surely something tucked away inside his oversized brain could save his life. It always had before.

One: Werewolves tend to be born on Christmas day. That’s useless.

Two: They are usually redheads. Also useless.

Three: If you are bitten or even scratched by a werewolf, you become one. That’s something to be concerned with.

Four: Silver. Werewolves hate silver. “That’s the ticket,” he thought. “But where do I get silver at this hour?”

London bolted out of the graveyard and splashed through a small brook that ran alongside the cemetery. The water didn’t seem to bother the wolf, which remained close behind, snarling and drooling. He was close enough that London could feel the beast’s hot breath on his neck.

“Quick, London! Think quick!” he said to himself. And then he knew what the answer was.

Kicking over a trashcan to slow the wolf a little, London screamed toward the local barbershop, outside of which stands a thermometer nearly as tall as a young monster hunter.

Slowing even half a step would be deadly, so without stopping London snatched up the thermometer on his way past the shop.
