CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Pilot

THE salty Hawaiian winds rushed around Pilot's face, tossing his hair wildly in all different directions. He saw a wisp of paleness glinting in the darkness, moving like an ocean wave, and headed toward it. Though he couldn't make out much more than an outline, he knew it had to be Kennedy leaning against a rock formation in the middle of the beach.

As he neared her, her outline turned to a shadow, and her shadow turned to a fully-formed image. She had changed out of her cutoff shorts and wore tight black jeans that hugged her legs like cigarette wrappers. She was barefoot, in a dark cutoff tank top, and her hair billowed behind her shoulders like a silk scarf. Her intense silver eyes sparkled like the moon against a midnight sky, beckoning him to come closer.

"Back at it already?" She handed him a blunt and he took a puff, nearly choking on it.

He coughed. "Did I mess up your evening?"

"Depends." Kennedy slid off the rock formation, popping a Mentos candy into her mouth. "I'm headed to a party. Want to come with?"

As she walked in the other direction, he watched her lithe movements, her swaying hips, her confident gait from behind. She glanced back at him with a penetrating stare, electrifying him. With one hand on her hip, she was nothing like other girls their age; she had a sexy stance and an attitude to match. She was the whole package.

Despite all that, he wasn't much of a partier. He tended toward quiet social encounters with one or two people at a time.

He shook his head at her invitation, but she didn't move, either toward him or away from him. "Don't you want your money?" He held out a wad of bills in her direction.

"Sure." She smiled, not moving an inch from where she was standing. "After we crash the bonfire one beach over."

He looked down at his t-shirt and baggy gym shorts. The water from dinner had dried, but he still had food stains at the bottom of his shirt. "Not exactly dressed for a bonfire."

"No one cares what you're wearing." Kennedy looked at him mischievously. "Plus, they'll have s'mores."

He dropped the blunt on the ground, coaxing some sand over it with his toes. He felt his legs moving forward, despite his ambivalence. He reached Kennedy and slid the money into her hand. "Who could turn down s'mores?"

She led the way to the bonfire. They walked in silence, and he felt suddenly shy. He hadn't smoked enough to get high, and walking side-by-side with a girl always made him nervous. He felt like he should be making a move—holding her hand, or maybe wrapping his arm around her shoulder casually. Finally, after they had walked for several minutes, he had to say something to ease his discomfort. "How did you hear about this party?"

"On the wind," Kennedy said coyly. He raised one eyebrow, but she didn't explain herself. In typical Kennedy fashion, she skipped ahead of him,
