Haruki wondered if the others could feel the subtle shifts in Leah’s divine energy. Something told him it had as much to do with her state of mind as that of the creature inside her. He frowned faintly.

I’m not normally this sensitive to the others and their beasts.

The Dragon was being unusually quiet where he lurked inside Haruki’s soul. He couldn’t help but feel that the creature was sulking, for some unfathomable reason.

Leah stared at her hands for a moment before taking a deep breath and turning to her father, her expression resolute. “Dad, I have something tell you.”

Jeremiah visibly stiffened.

“It’s about last night,” Leah mumbled.

Jeremiah’s face started to clear. “If you mean our fight, there’s nothing to—”

“I killed someone yesterday,” Leah blurted out.

Her words reverberated loudly around the room.

Jeremiah blanched. “What?”

“She means she killed a demon.” Haruki’s frown deepened. “It was a guy who worked at the coffee shop. He followed her into the alley behind the building and attacked her.”

Jeremiah’s knuckles whitened on the table. He opened and closed his mouth soundlessly, too stunned to speak.

Leah met Haruki’s gaze, her expression tortured. “Still, Patrick was—”

“He was a monster,” Haruki interrupted coolly. “Just like the man who tried to kill your father and his partner tonight.”

He caught Callie and Artemus’s puzzled glances out the corner of his eye and swallowed a grimace. Great. Even they think I’m acting like an asshole.

Leah chewed her lower lip, her eyes on him. “You said something to Patrick yesterday, just before he transformed. You told him he could fight the demon inside him. What did you mean by that?”

An awkward hush fell over them.

It was Drake who replied. “He meant that, in some instances, a human with a strong will power can suppress the monster inside him.”

A troubled expression flitted across Artemus’s face as he looked at his brother. From the guarded way Naomi and Barbara observed Drake, Haruki suspected they too could sense the demon within his soul.

Artemus sighed and rubbed the back of his head. “With everything else that happened this afternoon, I forgot to tell you guys about Elton’s visit today.”

“Elton dropped by?” Otis said.

“Yeah. And he had a doozie of a story to tell.” Artemus made a face. “Apparently, the dead are going missing around the city. And we think it has something to do with Ba’al.”

Jeremiah blinked “Oh. A couple of detectives at my precinct were just assigned that case.”

“Why on Earth would Ba’al be stealing dead bodies?” Sebastian said.

Serena’s face hardened. “Maybe they mean to experiment on them, like they did with the first-generation super soldiers.”

Nate clenched his fists. Their recent clash in Rome with the genetically enhanced super soldiers created by an Immortal and a rogue branch of the U.S. Army, and subsequently imbued with demonic powers by Ba’al, was still fresh in all their minds.

“I can’t quite see how a horde of demonic undead are meant to stop us,” Drake said dubiously. “I mean, they’re probably bone dry. All it’d take is for the Dragon to sneeze and they’d turn into walking torches.
