I was in the ballroom playing billiards against Axel while Kadran, Rune, and Sav tried to see who could hit the bullseye more in sixty seconds. I didn’t really see the point of it, but to each their own. Delphina was in her room putting away all her new clothes.

I sank a ball but missed my next shot. I had a feeling Axel was going easy on me, but I’d keep pretending he wasn’t.

“Fifty-two, you uncultured swine. And I do believe that means I win.” Sav took the bills the other two had thrown out on the bar and put them in his pocket. “If you ever want a rematch, just let me know.”

“It doesn’t make any sense how the bookworm beats us every time,” Kadran bemoaned.

“It’s all physics, boys,” Sav boasted.

Axel was shaking his head as he listened to their banter. I was just wondering how physics let him win. I sank my last ball and gave Axel a fist bump. “Next time, you don’t let me win.”

He smirked, “I don’t have any idea what you are talking about.”

I shook my head and walked over to the others. “Tables free if anyone wants to play. “

Kadran and Rune were already trading insults before they took a step. Axel called next game and went to pour himself a drink.

“Come with me.” Sav was holding his hand out.

I placed my hand in his and let him guide me to the spiral staircase that led up to the loft. When we reached the top, he popped open the skylight and hopped through.

I stood there with my hands on my hips. “So, I get you all are giants here, but this poor short person needs a little help if you want me to follow.”

I heard a laugh from downstairs and knew Kadran was getting a kick out of this. Sav poked his head back in and winked before he disappeared again. What the hell?

It wasn’t but a moment later that he dropped back down. “Alright, let’s go.”

He picked me up at my waist and lifted me through the skylight. I threw my leg over and climbed up to stand. He followed right behind me.

“Close your eyes.”

I closed my eyes and he carefully led me around the roof. We stopped and he gently pushed me to sit.

I felt him sit down beside me. “Okay, you can open your eyes now.”

My eyes parted and I sucked in a breath. “Oh, wow.”

Fairy lights decorated the space and a blanket was laid out where I was sitting. I could see the lights of Jacksonville off in the distance. But out here, there were still so many stars.

“It’s the last night of the Orionid Meteor Shower,” Sav explained.

I scanned the depths of the night sky for signs of the meteors. “We will be able to see it here?”

He nodded and settled on the blanket next to me. He reached over and turned the fairy lights off and cast us into darkness. It was like we were in our own little world.
