Chapter Seven

Hazel

Heather is going to kill me.

My roommate and best friend is as harmless as a bunny, but she’ll probably write me off as a villain in one of her novels and then give me the most painful death imaginable.

She’d definitely do it if only to pay me back for not listening to her.

She told me my brother was dangerous and I needed to be careful. Heather knows better than most how violent my brother, Tim, can be. She also knows that it was Tim who forced me to hack into Stone Guards Security and steal sensitive information about some of Bishop’s clients—something Bishop still doesn’t know that I did.

Tim has had his sights on Bishop for years. At first, I thought he was jealous of the other man’s power and success. But last year, he finally told me that Bishop is a criminal, a danger to everyone in West Valley. He said that Bishop’s company protected the same criminals who had killed our parents when I was only eighteen years old, leaving my controlling brother as my only remaining family.

Despite being a genius with computers, it took me nearly six months to find a weakness in Stone Guards Security’s firewall, and even longer than that to find the protected files Tim wanted. But once I was in, I had access to Bishop’s entire system, every last record, document, and image. So, I went off-script and started poking around.

What I found changed everything I thought I knew. I learned that Bishop was indeed just as dangerous as Tim had described, but he hadn’t protected the men who’d killed our parents. No, the person responsible for their deaths was much closer to home.

When I saw Tim standing on the path in front of my apartment building when Bishop dropped me off, my heart jumped to my throat. I’ve known since I was a teenager that Tim kept tabs on me and hated it when he didn’t know where I was. I’ve been afraid of him my entire life. But I’ve never seen Tim look the way he did tonight when he saw me with Bishop.

I’d immediately jumped from the car and run toward the building, but Tim was nowhere in sight by the time I reached the front door. Icy dread snaked down my spine. If my brother wasn’t going to confront me, that meant whatever waited for me in my apartment was much worse.

I felt horrible that Heather was home alone when my brother had come to our apartment looking for me. Not that Tim would have hurt her. No, he wanted everyone to believe he was the doting, self-sacrificing older brother, so he saved his wrath for me alone.

The first thing I did once I reached my apartment was to go to my bedroom. I fell to my knees at the destruction in front of me. Tim had ripped my room apart, and my beloved computer—the one I’d built myself after saving for two years to buy the parts—was in shattered pieces on the floor.
