Chapter thirty-eight

JT had managed almost four hours of sleep on the flight. The stresses of the last couple of days had left him exhausted, which when combined with the pain meds he'd taken, meant he'd slept soundly.

There was no time for separate and dispersed entry routes into Benin for the Vigilant team so they were all on board the same Air France flight from Charles De Gaulle to Cotonou.

'Welcome to Benin Sir!' the smiling Air Steward stood to attention, looking remarkably crisp after a long flight.

'Thank you,' said JT, as he adjusted the shoulder strap on his back pack.

'Are you here on Business or is this a social visit?' asked the Steward, as they waited for the disembarkation steps to arrive at the aircraft door.

'Bit of both really, we're headed up into the W National Park for a bit a recce.'

'A recce?' asked the Steward.

'We're filmmakers, we're doing some location scoping for a documentary series on the African Bush Elephants up there.'

'That sounds amazing, I've never been on safari. In fact, I'd never heard of W National Park.'

'It's called W because of the shape of the Niger river; it looks like a W carved out of the land. The park is shared between three countries, it's here in Benin but it crosses the borders with Niger and Burkina Faso. The elephants don't care about the borders someone drew on a map; they just roam wherever they please.'

'Wow, I'm so jealous, it sounds like you're going on quite an adventure.'

'More than you know,' said JT, stepping off the aeroplane into the hot and humid African morning.

As JT and the team headed for the terminal, he checked his phone, reading a message from Hamilton saying the other's had arrived safely in the UK.

Easy had travelled with Rosa Hawthorne to London, where they were met by Rory Maxwell to be driven to Hamilton's place in the country.

Easy had immediately gone to work in Hamilton's secret underground bunker. The bunker was a top secret survivor of the Cold War, Hamilton had requisitioned it, modernising it to be a Command and Control centre for Vigilant. Kitted out with access to all UK intelligence databases, and through them, several of the major players across the globe, the bunker was state of the art, despite being built more than half a century ago.

JT and Hamilton had debated the best course of action to keep Rosa safe, until they had dealt with her ex-husband. Rory had to return to work at New Scotland Yard, so Hamilton wanted to ship Rosa up to the teams' castle in the Highlands of Scotland. Rosa had steadfastly refused to go, saying she wanted to stay so she could know what was going on.

In his typically cryptic fashion, Hamilton had responded with a crossword clue when JT asked what he thought of Rosa, now that he'd met her in person. Most men, in fact most people, would have commented first on how beautiful the woman was, but not Hamilton, though he could patently see it for himself.
