Chapter 7 â Recent Goings On
Recently my gorgeous boyfriend Connor and I lost a dear friend of oursâpractically familyâin a workplace accident. He was quite young, only in his thirties. Tom was a roofer, and fell to his death, seeming to be fine, but died of internal injuries forty-eight hours later. Maya, his wife screamed, cried and rocked in the only way a mother of three very young children, that loves her husband endlessly, can do. Weâd been out on barbecues at the beach together, been to each othersâ place and Iâd even babysat Renee along with Mayaâs and Tomâs three boys.
Tom was so young; I canât believe heâs really gone. Of course, he wasnât really gone.
One morning I felt something swatting my face. Assuming this was the bedspread, I sat up, only to discover this was actually our friend, Tom, looking very pleased to see me. Where was he? You guessed it, standing at the bottom of the bed as I sat up at the other end.
I need to preface this by explaining that some years ago Connor had told Tom all about my abilities. Tom thought this was fascinating and said Connor was really lucky to have someone like me as a girlfriend. First time Iâve heard that one, so thanks, Tom.
So there he was standing at the bottom of my bed, and let me tell you, itâs a disconcerting experience, particularly when you know the person very well. In fact Connor had been a friend of Tomâs for nearly twenty years, and Iâd gotten to know him over many visits, so it was pretty strange to see him standing at the bottom of the bed telling me to get up.
Straight away I told him I was tired and to go away (although not quite that politely of course) and I didnât need waking up at 6am, that was what children were for, if I ever had any of my own. No scratch that, no one should bloody well wake anyone up at 6am, anytime, ever. Itâs wrong on so many levels. Tom told me he had a lot to tell me and couldnât wait. Yeah thanks, Tom, I already figured that one out. Deciding I wouldnât be getting more sleep, I headed for the bathroom. He immediately started following me, and I asked him if he could let me pee in peace.
Donât get me wrong, if a friend in the flesh needs me, Iâm there, happy to help. The difference here was Connorâs grief, raw and fresh, and Iâd seen how it had affected him. I knew I shouldnât be annoyed, but I wished Tom had waited a bit longer before seeking a messenger.
I got up and started getting ready for work. Tom started throwing information at me in rapid fire. I was having trouble keeping up, especially as tired as I was. I told him this and he apologized.
Letâs get one thing straight: Tom, when he was alive, was a very gentle, kind, generous, and accommodating person.
