Chapter 24

Gunther and Teeglio stood across the street looking at the building that was once occupied by the mayor.

“So that’s it,” said Gunther.

“Aye, that’s where the wretched custard lives,” Teeglio replied. “And the sooner we get gone from here the better.”

“I don’t need telling twice my friend. The medals are becoming unbearably warm.”

Just then they heard a piercing scream from within the building and saw their old acquaintances and an odd-looking hunchback being ushered onto the street by a burly guard. Gunther and Teeglio turned away quickly, lowered their heads, and moved off in the other direction.

Dirtworth stood alone in the spotlight waiting nervously.

“Is it true the pair we have been searching for are here, in Pleez?” Kalus wanted to confirm.

“It would seem so my lord,” Dirtworth offered meekly.

“And just how is it that you didn’t know?”

“W-well I was on my way to tell you they have been seen…”

“Never mind that now,” Kalus barked. “I have a plan that will get me the scroll — and them — all in one, great, gulp.”

Dirtworth’s eyes shifted. “Shall I have them killed my lord?”

“Don’t be a dork Dirtworth! They can find the scroll quicker than I at this point. No, gather as many as you can find and chase them. Sooner or later, they will bring the scroll case to me themselves. Let them find it then follow them at a safe distance. This Wille place seems to be the key. That must be where they are headed. That is where young Gunther Doone shall meet with me — and his death.”

Dirtworth listened carefully to the plan, nodding his agreement, then Kalus yelled again.

“What are you waiting for? Chase them Dirtworth! Make chase! Make chase! Now get out of here and pull up your pants!”

Dirtworth did as he was told and left the spotlight. The slamming door echoed through the chamber and all was quiet again. Kalus gestured for Lutrene to come forward. The Commander stepped into the light once again. “Yes, my lord?”

“Prepare your men for a journey. When the time is right, I will want you to go to this Wille and secure it for my arrival. I don’t know how long it’s going to take, but I believe the boy Gunther Doone is bound to return there eventually. These intrepid types always seem to have this need to go home; and perhaps you’ll do a better job than Dirtworth. At least you are descended from traitors — it’s in your blood. Dirtworth is just a fool.”

Lutrene bowed obediently. “I couldn’t agree more my lord,” he said. “Do you want me to bring the device?”

“No,” said Kalus shaking his head, “we'll be back with the case soon enough.”

Lutrene nodded, turned and left the chamber.

“Guard!” Kalus called out.

The guard appeared and Kalus spoke in a relaxed tone.

“Bring me someone to eat — not too young and not too old, just ripe.”

The guard nodded and turned.

Kalus called out after him. “And not too much hair!”
