After the tea had been served Norris continued. ‘I mentioned that the expanding colonists, called Trekboers, travelling farmers, by the Dutch, had encountered the first of the Xhosa tribes in 1795. It’s difficult to say exactly where the first contact took place but it was probably around the valley of the Great Fish River.’ He pointed to the map. ‘The indigenous tribes which the colonists had previously encountered were the Khoikhoi and the San or Bushmen. The Khoikhoi were pastoralists and were slowly driven off their traditional grazing lands and assimilated by the colonists. The San are hunter gatherers and have been hunted almost to extinction by everyone who comes up against them. They are skilled hunters who use poison arrows to down large prey. They also use the same poison arrows against their human enemies and this, together with their skill at blending with their surroundings has made them hated and feared by all and sundry.’
