Chapter 6

Hodge thought there were way too many people here. Every time she found herself a place to just chill out for a moment, one of the other women would come and stand with her. This time it was Sasha. She didn’t say much, other than to tell her she wasn’t freaked out when she asked her.

“I’d just look into whatever is in front of you, and I don’t think anyone would notice a thing.” She looked at the boxes in front of her and simply fell in love with the dish set in the box. “That is beautiful. My goodness, Andi, there is a lot of it too.”

The two of them counted twenty-four place settings in the boxes on the table. Also, there were cups but no saucers, serving bowls, and a ladle. After looking around, they found the rest of the set under the table. It looked to be a complete set, too, with two sets of serving utensils, a coffee urn, and a pie slicer. It was all in nine boxes, not including the four that were on top of the table.

“I have just the place for all this too. Unless you wanted it. I won’t take it from any of you guys.” Sasha told her she was such a wonderful person. “Not really. If you wanted it, I was going to bully you into letting me have it.”

They were both laughing as they made their way around the rest of the auction. She’d already found two things she really wanted for their home. Also, making notes of the tables she wanted to get back to, she found a beautiful set of outdoor pots that she thought would be nice in the spring and summer around their deck.

“Did you see the desk? I’ve been watching people around it. The owner, a ghost now, is telling people to go away. He’s not in trouble for doing that, but he is making it hard on people to get close enough to it to look it over.” Hodge asked how that worked, him telling them to go away. “He just makes a suggestion that they don’t want it. I don’t know why he doesn’t want it sold, but I didn’t get a chance to ask him. Come with me, and we’ll find out.”

Walking to the desk, she could see right away that it wasn’t anything she would want. It was oddly shaped and small. The room that Gunner had been using as his office had a good-sized table that he was using, so when he got a desk, it would have to be massive. She didn’t see anything like that here.

“You don’t want this.” She didn’t know why she heard the man but didn’t look at him when she said she didn’t. It was much too small for her home. “It’s actually not. It’s much larger, but the idiots here didn’t put it together. See those pieces over there? They’re the sides to this piece.”

She moved over to the other two pieces.
