“Well, I haven’t received any new intel on Quinn yet,” Freedom said over the phone the next afternoon as Inigo sat behind Mak’s desk in the Guardian Alliance office. “But I did find something else interesting about Kim Rutgers.”

Inigo was still getting used to being around Jasper after their night together, but so far so good. Neither of them had really said much about it, and that was okay, since Inigo was still coming to terms with how he felt about it.

Yes, the sex had been amazing. No, he wasn’t sure where things would go from here.

He put his phone on speaker and set it on the desk as Jasper took a seat in front of the desk. “Go ahead. Jasper’s here now too.”

“Turns out Kim’s “American princess” past was a lie,” Freedom said. “She emigrated from Romania in the early 1990s.”

“Figures.” Jasper crossed his arms, his biceps straining the black T-shirt he wore and reminding Inigo of how those arms had felt wrapped around him the night before. “I didn’t buy the fact she and her husband were as white bread as they pretended.”

“Yes. She went to acting school to learn English and lose her accent shortly after she arrived in California. Took classes for about three years in LA. Afterward, she changed her name and did a few low-budget slasher movies before becoming a high-dollar escort in Beverly Hills. Which is how she met Tim Rutgers.”

Inigo shook his head. “None of this was in the bureau files. But then she was never really our focus.”

“Now that we know she’s banging Quinn, I think we should take another look at her. Especially since her clientele consisted of high-powered men. They paid her well for her services,” Freedom continued. “So well she could afford all that plastic surgery to make her into the woman she is today. She looks a lot different now than she did back then. She and Tim hooked up after the surgery and got married then moved to Oracle Falls.”

Freedom sent through some photos which Inigo pulled up on his laptop. PR shots of Tim and Kim on their happy day. “Can you send me the pics of Kim pre-surgery?”

“Yep, coming through now,” Freedom said. “Check your inbox.”

Inigo opened the message from Freedom as Jasper came around the desk. No doubt about it, the Kim Rutgers of today was virtually unrecognizable from the poor, brunette Romanian she’d when she’d first arrived on American soil. In fact, the only thing about her that had stayed the same were the eyes—still pale blue and haunted, as if she’d seen too much and forgotten nothing. He’d seen it the day they’d gone to question Kim at the mansion. At the time, Inigo had put the woman’s strange vibes down to her being freshly out of rehab and coping with the grief of losing her husband so unexpectedly. But now he knew those wounds went deeper.

“Where does Quinn fit into this picture?” Jasper asked, sitting on the edge of the desk to look at the screen over Inigo’s shoulder.
