I stood and followed. “You can’t leave without me.”

He looked over his shoulder as he grabbed the doorknob. “Fine. Do you even eat?”

“Yes,” I said in a neutral tone, hoping that it would calm him a little. “Although not in a while.”

I followed him out the door, and he whipped out his phone and started typing. “There’s a small cafe a few blocks away. Yelp gave it four stars.”

Whatever that meant. After a few very silent blocks, we strolled into a tiny diner. Most of the tables were empty. I chose one in the back so I could keep my eye on the door in case anyone out of the ordinary came in.

A small blonde woman approached the table. I looked her up and down with my eyebrows raised; she wore super-short shorts and a tank top. Times had definitely changed. She set down menus in front of us and said, “What can I get you to drink?”

“Coffee.” Garin looked up at her, smiling, and she returned his interest with a huge grin. Why did all these women find him so charming?

Interrupting them I said, “I’ll take a hot chocolate.” It had been such a long time since I’d had it. I was going to have chocolate cake, too. I could never have too much chocolate.

As soon as the server left, Garin was back to his stone-faced self, and we sat in silence until the food was delivered.

For such a small guy, Garin ate a lot, and he didn’t say a word while doing it. I decided I was going to make him talk. I couldn’t take the silence anymore.

“Your uncle used to have cheese melted on his apple pie and sometimes even ketchup.”

His eyebrows shot up. “That’s disgusting.” I’d seen worse food around.

“He drank a lot and had a lady in every town we worked in.” He looked up under his hair, giving me a very George look, then went back to eating. I smiled, thinking of George. I missed him more than I had thought.

Garin moved his now-empty plate out of the way and grabbed the waiting stack of pancakes. “I didn’t know George very well. He was always off working.”

Silently, we both took a drink, thinking our separate thoughts. I held the hot chocolate to my face, inhaling the heavenly aroma.

“We didn’t get the normal time to get acquainted. You have a file on me, but I know nothing about you. I feel at a disadvantage. May I ask? How old are you?”

Garin set his fork down and sat back. “Thirty-two.”

He didn’t look that old. “That’s a little old to start out in the field, isn’t it?”

He shrugged. “No one retired, no one died.” His eyes met mine. “You were the only agent available, and I was the unlucky one to get you.” Ouch.

“I didn’t mean for your uncle or my charge Danielle to die. The case was wrapped up, and I’d already left.”

“Yet you didn’t kill Soren when you know you should have.” The anger in his word stung.
