Val’s laser rune cutter could slice through most gemstones in a single movement, but she had to move slowly to etch shapes onto diamonds. Peering through the loupe, she bit her lip as she worked the rune cutter’s glowing tip across the stone’s façade, carving the last line of the rune for sunlight.

Her hands were sweating when she turned off the rune cutter and put it aside. She leaned back to study the diamond under natural light. It was a stunning piece for a human client, with only a few minor wards attached, but the sunlight rune made it shimmer with light from within. Its brilliance, fire, and luster were amplified, scattering light through its inside.

“Gorgeous, if I do say so myself,” Val murmured. Shadow sighed.

Val glanced at the selenite chunk in the smithy’s corner out of habit. It had been weeks since someone triggered the alarm amulets. It stood dull and dusty in the corner, and Val returned her attention to the diamond.

Her phone hummed on the workbench, vibrating the loupe. Irritated, Val glanced at the caller ID.

Queen Julia Pendragon.

Val picked up the phone. “What’s up, Julie?”

“Hey, Val. Congrats on your big win the other week.” Julie chuckled. “You’ve done the para and human worlds a massive favor.”

“Oh, Rootfingers’ crew?” Val scoffed. “Amateurs.”

Julie snorted. “I know you’re being flippant since they’re seasoned pros. The OPMA has been struggling to capture them for decades. They go in, hit hard, and get out before we get there...except that this time, they ran into victims who hit harder.”

“I’m glad we took a dangerous crew off the streets.” Val shuddered. “Before the Hunt Conquest or Niamh could hire them.”

“Exactly. We found out that their next contract was for Niamh. Unfortunately, we don’t know what that contract was. She hadn’t told them.” Julie sighed. “Either way, it’s a setback for her, which is a win for us.”

“Good.” Val gritted her teeth. “The more we can slow her down, the sooner you’ll catch her.”

“I hope so. Sometimes I—” Julie stopped and cleared her throat. “This wouldn’t be the first conflict where they’ve caused trouble.”

“Oh?” Val raised her eyebrows.

“We’ve uncovered that they go farther back than we expected,” Julie explained. “They’ve caused shit in human and paranormal wars for centuries. They’ll do anything for anyone who pays them. Including rounding up luckless Jews or Tutsis.”

Val had no idea what either of those were but assumed they were references to human history. “Merlin’s asshole. Glad we got them.”

“Glad is an understatement. Anyway, that’s only part of why I called,” Julie added.

Val leaned forward. “You got Tetra’s letter of motivation? She worked on it for days. Never seen her so determined to get something right. It was...weird, actually.”

“Well, tell her that her hard work has paid off.” Julie paused. “I read her letter to the jury yesterday and fully supported Tetra’s idea.”

Val blinked. “You did?”

“Yes. I think it’s brilliant. Antin’s a criminal, there’s no denying that, but anyone who’s met him can see that he can change. I fully believe that.
