“Jason?” Vivian calls from the top of the stairs an hour after her arrival. “I can take you up here, if you’d like.”

I take a deep breath before buttoning my suit jacket to climb the stairs. When I look up, she’s in her red flowing silk robe in her bare feet. Her hair is still damp, wavy, and full around her face which has a new toned-down palette. “Maybe we should get you in a consistent cardio program so you have more stamina,” she adds.

I counter quickly. “I run daily before you wake. I think five miles is enough. Would you like to sit in your office or in the sitting room?”

“So not fun. The sitting room, I suppose. I’m not ready for work mode just yet.” Vivian whirls around so the tails of her robe float open and away from her legs all the way up to her mid-thigh. I know it’s for my benefit, her face gives her away. “So grumpy. I know what could fix that immediately.”

I do my best to ignore the entirely obvious innuendo she’s projecting. “We have something of importance to discuss.”

“Unless it involves you, me, a bottle of champagne, and a long night, I’m not interested.” She sits in one of the large, plush chairs and crosses her legs, exposing her entire thigh up to the curve of her hip. “Though, I suppose I still have more of you to break down.”

I ignore her advances again and simply cut to the chase. “Richard Barnes was murdered and found floating in Boston Harbor.”

I wait for some sort of emotion, shock, possibly a hint of sorrow. There is nothing, literally nothing. “Okay. What’s the media saying?”

“Is that it? That’s all you have to say?”

She chuckles under her breath. “What did you think I’d do? Sob hysterically? Need comforting? I’ll send his poor wife some flowers and donate to a charity or something. Was this the big news?”

“A man that you’re clearly intimately familiar with, and had a very loud altercation with in the middle of your office has turned up dead. Shot through the forehead at close range and dumped into the water. Yes, Vivian, this was the big news.”

Her stone-cold features and lack of emotion chill me to my core.

“Richard Barnes was a piece of shit. At the end of the day, he likely deserved it,” she says plainly. “This isn’t something you should worry your pretty little head with, Jason.”

“With all due respect, that’s bullshit, and you know it,” I bark at her uncharacteristically.

She simply laughs. “I do enjoy this rough side of you though. It’s sexy.”

“If the authorities come to talk to you, what will you tell them?”

“Me? Why would they come to me? He was married. I was in Aruba when he died. I think being out of the country is a suitable alibi. Are you suggesting I need one?”

I want to say yes. I want to scream it at her. That would only tell her definitively how I feel about her and working for her.
