Present

Gabe’s fist connected with my face before I even realized he was back in the room.

“What the actual fuck are you playing at?” he shouted.

Yells and screams sounded around us, from those not used to our band’s violent outbursts, as he threw punch after punch. I staggered back under the onslaught, regained my balance and then pressed forward, trading blow for blow, until someone grabbed me and hauled me out of his reach.

Wiping the blood from my face, I saw Seth had Gabe, arms pinned behind his back as he tried to surge forward again. I knew without looking that Luca had hold of me.

“I don’t know what fucking game you’re playing right now, D, but you need to stop,” he told me in a low voice. “It’s not funny anymore.”

“There’s no fucking game. I’m sick of all the secrets everyone is keeping.” I snapped in return. “What’s your secret, Gabe? What are you keeping from us?”

“Fuck you,” Gabe snarled in return.

“Get him out of here,” Seth threw at Luca, nodding at me. “Go home. Cool down.”

“Harper’s staying in a hotel,” Gabe called after me, as I turned to follow Luca. “I hope you’re fucking satisfied.”

I stopped and looked back at him. “Did you tell her you didn’t know anything about me and Siobhan?”

“Of course I fucking did.”

“But she didn’t believe you?”

“What do you think?” he snapped.

“You know what, Gabe? You should really take some time to think about why Harper automatically assumes you’re lying whenever something comes up.” Luca and Seth jumped in front of us again when Gabe surged forward.

I didn’t wait around to hear if he had anything to say in response. I walked out and let the door slam behind me. My cell was ringing before I exited the building.

“Get your ass to my office right now,” Karl barked down the line.

I rolled my eyes. “Did Gabe call you?”

“No. Candice did. I want the entire band here within the next thirty minutes.” He cut the call.

“Karl?” Luca asked from behind me.

I nodded. “We’ve been summoned.” I looked around. “I told Diesel he could have the afternoon off. I was going to hassle Siobhan until she agreed to talk to me. Do you have your car?”

“Yeah.” Luca waved a hand to the left, where Ryder leaned against the side of a black Lincoln Navigator.

“New car?” I asked.

“Not mine. Ryder likes to pretend he’s driving a tank or something.”

The man in question straightened as we approached. “Where to?”

“NFG Records,” Luca told him. “It seems we have a band meeting to go to.”
