Tonight’s the night. If this event goes off smoothly, it’s going to iron out a lot of the rough edges of this financial transition. Nothing like a little bit of ceremony to make something feel more official. More celebrated. And humans buy into that just as much as anybody else. Tricky fuckers that they are.

Frankly, my frustration level is almost through the roof. Never, in all my time with the Intergalactic Bank has it been so difficult to make a transition. I feel like I’m a broken record, even to myself.

But I’m betting that tonight sets everything right. It damn well better. I’m doing my best to put any worries over that aside and just keep after it. All that matters now is making sure all the details are so finely managed that there’s no room for error. That’s the key.

Security is of the utmost importance. It’s unlikely that anyone would try anything - not here, not tonight - but I’m not taking any chances. Besides, a little show of might is a great tactic. You keep everybody safe, you make a bit of a stink about it, and everyone feels a bit better. You look like a king, and they’re more relaxed. Which makes them more inclined to listen and negotiate.

At least, that’s the plan.

I walk around the event space, looking for anything that could be deemed imperfect.

“Crilyn!” The head of the bartending staff snaps to attention.

“Sir?”

“How deep is the stable for top shelf liquors?”

“Five bottles for each top shelf, and two for second tier.”

“That should do,” I nod. “And wine?” He meets my eyes with a light smirk.

“No worries there, sir. Trust me.”

“Good.” I like this kid. “Straighten your tie.” As he does, I turn to breathe in the whole of the hall. It looks pretty damned impressive, if I do say so myself.

I chose this space specifically because it's adjacent to the bank and its offices. Make everything that much easier if I need to get papers and documents. Polit knows these bastards are still addicted to their paper. If anybody gets antsy for a report they can hold their hands, I want to be sure we can get one in short order.

I spot Hunter from across the room and head over to him. He’s been tasked with running second and third checks, so I need to follow up with him. Much as the little fucker bugs me, he does have an eye for detail.

“Hunter,” I snap as I draw near. He instinctively pulls up straight, which feels pretty good. But, then he softens into a more casual posture, which just sticks in my gut.

“Kral,” he responds. “What’s up?”

“How are we looking? Is everything running according to plan?”

“Yeah, I think so,” he nods, looking loosely around the room. “No problems so far.”

“Good,” I say, with just a bit of side eye. “Let’s make sure that it stays that way, all right?” Something in the way he said, ‘so far’ feels weird.

“Don’t worry, Kral. I’ve got this. It’s all under control.
