Joy, a family-focused sharer I mentioned in chapter two, has to worry that if she shares too much, her kids could be harmed, something that briefly crossed my mind when I allowed our story to be featured in front of such a potentially large audience. âBecause of the lines of work my husband and I do, I tend to be cautious of potential predators online and also the ability to track down my family through things I post,â Joy explained when I asked her why she tended to hesitate. She is a prosecutor, and her husband works in the medical field. âWhile people know my address, I donât advertise it on my feed. I do sometimes reference the kidsâ schools. I donât use their teachersâ names or anything else that could be used by someone to âproveâ to the kids that they are a friend. The kids know not to go with anyone and not to give any personal info to strangers.â
Along with having concerns about safety, Joy also avoids sharing anything negative on social media. âI try to post accomplishments and funny things but nothing about them getting in trouble or anything that could be construed as a poor reflection on them.â Joy is a personal friend of mine, and she told me that a lot of the reasoning behind her actions âis actually because of the conversations you and I have had,â she told me (causing me to blush), âand the subsequent reading Iâve done.â
