CHAPTER FOUR
THE MARIJUANA PLANT
Marijuana is a hardy plant that grows in both temperate and tropical conditions throughout the world and can thrive in diverse and sometimes challenging environments. It is a heliotrope, preferring direct sunlight and open spaces, and so grows poorly in shaded areas. The many uses of this multi-faceted plant have historically made it a valuable crop, and today there are collectively more breeding programs for marijuana than any other crop. There are three distinct varieties of cannabis that are grown for their Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC content: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica and Cannabis ruderalis. Within each of these varieties lie a great number of individual strains, each with a different cannabinoid profile and medicinal effect. THC is essentially the substance that provides the soothing, medicinal qualities that many people associate with cannabis.
Cannabis plants produce psychoactive ingredients called cannabinoids. The main ingredient of the cannabinoids that gives the high effect is called - delta 9 THC. Cannabis plants also produce the - delta 8 THC. This ingredient is in low levels but does contribute to the high. On the other hand, some plants do not produce any THC at all. These plants have been genetically altered to produce very low levels of THC and are mainly used by farmers in some countries who have permission to grow cannabis for hemp production only. THC is are unique to the cannabis species and is not found anywhere else. Plants grown for their THC content are commonly called marijuana.
The THC drug is principally contained in multicellular structures on the surface of the flower heads and smaller leaves called stalked capitate trichome glands. These appear as tiny, translucent, mushroom-like structures that are visible through a magnifying glass. The heads of these structures contain oil that is secreted as a sticky resin and that contains high levels of THC. Male plants have low quantities of THC and are usually removed from the crop to avoid the pollination of the females. Once a female has been pollinated all her efforts go into seed production, which is not what marijuana growers want. By leaving the female unpollinated growers get thicker, more resinous buds whose weight is composed of flower material, not seeds. The Spanish word for seedless is “Sinsemilla,” and this is what gives these harvests their name.
Female plants also produce resin glands. Some of these glands may have lots of resin but are not very potent while other plants may have little resin but are very potent. When a plant is grown in optimal conditions, it has lots of resin and is very potent. Resin glands are produced all over the female flowers and new leaves. They can be seen clearly with the use of a magnifying aid. These resin glands are correctly called Trichomes. It is within these glands that growers find the main concentration of produced cannabinoids and THC. When a plant is in full flowering phase, the resin gland can explode or break dropping resin down onto the leaves below. This can also give the leaves their shiny frosty potent look during flowering.
