THE REST OF THE WORK day dragged on. The manila envelope was never far from my mind. Neither was the clock's constant clicking, counting down the minutes Ken had left to live. My worries over Janice hadn’t fully subsided either.

Historically, the raven selected only one victim at a time. If thwarted all bets were off, as I’d learned just a month earlier. That time, saving one victim led to another being snatched plus more collateral damage than any small town gossip could handle.

I could only hope Ken was now the primary target. The raven on his picture at his home and on his shadow at the shop solidified my concerns. It hadn’t reappeared with Janice when she showed up damaged and a bit disconnected from her early encounter with the bird.

Sunset had settled over the main square before Terry walked through the front door and straight into the kitchen. He winked at me as he passed but said nothing.

I knew he was supposed to take over for me in the front so I could finish up orders in the back. That didn’t mean I’d expected him to show.

He strolled back into the front with a fresh register in hand. “Go ahead,” he said, nodding toward the kitchen. “Stick your register in the safe and take your dinner break.”

My mouth dropped. “You sure?”

“Of course I’m sure.” Terry slid out my cash drawer and shoved it at me. “Now get. I’ll see you in an hour.”

I held the drawer, still flummoxed. “An hour?”

“Geez.” Terry huffed. “What do you think I am? A monster? You’ve been here all day alone. I think a longer break is more than due ya. Now beat it!”

“Thanks,” I said. Terry waved me away, as he entered his employee id into the register.

I hustled to obey, eager to rip open a specific envelope.
