All the expression drained from Grendel’s face. Bayo had been trying to keep her distracted with conversation after the cave-in; he didn’t want her to fixate on the fact that they’d almost been buried alive or her hunger. He didn’t want to fixate on those facts, either.

If she hadn’t run back for him, he’d be trapped under the weight of the mountain and the abandoned bones. He pushed the thought aside and focused on the Vampire. She fell back onto her haunches and hugged her knees to her chest. Her face was coated with grime, as his probably was, but what really marred it was the trickle of her own blood seeping from the corner of her mouth.

What had she said? Carrying him through the out-of-time made her hungry? And she’d “carried” him through the long tunnel anyway.

“There has to be another way out,” he said, to make himself believe it.

Her gaze darted to him, clear and focused. The Ember hummed with bloodlust, and if he hadn’t felt that, he might have thought it a more pleasant type of lust.

“Let’s have a snack,” he said.

She raised a thoughtful eyebrow.

“I bite back,” he reminded her.

“Would probably be worth it,” she said, and his cheeks flushed, despite himself.

She shook her head, wiped her face, and then scowled at the blood on her hand. Frowning and looking human again, she slid off her pack. He took his off, too.

“We should probably itemize our supplies,” she said. “I have two liters of water.” She removed two strangely shaped canteens. “Three more yogurts, my sleeping bag, a jacket—” She pulled out a tightly rolled, olive green, bundle of fabric. “—my glasses, a utility knife, a package of nuts and dried fruit someone left at my house that I don’t want to eat and brought for you—” She threw said package at him.

He caught it in midair. “Should I accuse you of trying to fatten me up?”

She sighed. “You probably shouldn’t trust my motives from here on out.”

“I have never trusted your motives,” he said.

Her shoulders fell. “Well, that makes it easy then.”

He felt a twinge of guilt, though he shouldn’t.

She rummaged in her bag. “I also have these.” She dumped a small package of shortbread cookies on the floor.

“This is how you pack for caving?” he said.

“You didn’t give me a lot of time,” she shot back. Which was also true. He’d given her a few minutes to grab her pack and scribble out a note to a friend explaining she’d be gone for a few days—she’d promised it would ensure they wouldn’t come hunting for her, and she hadn’t been lying.

He’d been nervous, thinking more about how much working with a Vampire would cost him, even if he knew it had to be done. He also hadn’t been completely certain Grendel wouldn’t bolt. He could feel truthfulness, but minds could change fast. He’d pushed her to hurry, taking it for granted that when she said the walk through the cave wasn’t long and “not really dangerous,” just “scary,” it would be true.
