Great room by Lori Dennis, photo by Ken Hayden
This open space accommodates a variety of activities allowing cooking, entertaining, and lounging to occur simultaneously. There’s enough room for people to feel like they aren’t on top of each other. I installed mirrors to make the space feel even roomier.
ELIMINATING “STUFF”
The easiest way to gain square footage for living space is to get rid of things you don’t need or use. Good organization of important, necessary items is the key to being able to live in smaller spaces. The main reason we think we need so much space is because we have too much stuff. My favorite design show on television was the one where they cleaned out the all of the junk in houses by putting the items out in the yard in piles labeled keep, throw away, sell, donate. I was thrilled to see that without spending a dime or using any new resources these homeowners discovered hundreds of extra square footage. I witnessed this first hand after my friends, a married couple with a nine-year-old daughter, complained for years about how they had no space and needed to move to a bigger home. It never made any sense to me because they were only three people who lived in what I considered a generously sized home (2,000 square feet) with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a formal living and dining space, and a family room. This year they bit the bullet and had a huge yard sale. Over a couple of hours they made a few thousand dollars, visited with their neighbors, and discovered that they really did have quite a bit of space.
If you have items that you aren’t using, give them away, donate them to a charity, or sell them. Don’t allow them to become old, damaged, and eventually useless. This reminds me of deteriorating cars I see parked on the street or in people’s driveways. I always wonder why someone didn’t just put them up for sale or donate them instead of letting them rot away and become eyesores.
