THE RESOURCES OF THE UPPER DANUBE REGION RELEVANT FOR TOURISM DEVELOPMENT

The River Danube was declared by the European Union as one of the biggest natural tourist attractions. With a total length of 2,857 km, the river is one of the backbones of the river basin of “old continent.” Its river basin covers an area of 817,000 km2 (Natchkov, 1997). Total river basin can be divided into upper, which cuts the Alps; the central, passing through Pannonian Basin; and bottom part that cuts the Carpathians and flows into the Black Sea, which is also known as the “Pontic.”

In Serbia, the entire length of the river is navigable (588 km), and its course consists of three spatial geographical areas: The Upper Danube region, where the Danube passes through the Pannonian basin; the central part that includes the so-called “metropolitan area” of the largest urban centers of Belgrade, Novi Sad, Smederevo; and in the Lower Danube region it passes through the “Iron Gates” (“Djerdap“), the largest and oldest national park in the Republic of Serbia.

The most significant natural potentials for tourism development in the area of the Upper Danube region are:

Special Nature Preserve “Gornje Podunavlje”;

River Danube with coastline;

Good geographic and traffic position – European Corridor 7 (Danube River) and location of the area on the border of three countries (Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary);

Moderate continental climate suitable for tourist stays;

Rich flora and fauna;

Spatial diversity of the area, characterized by: – Urban centers: Sombor, Apatin, Bač, and Bačka Palanka;

– Special Nature Preserve “Gornje Podunavlje”;

– Numerous village ambient units;

– Widespread rural areas.
