In September 1962 no’s 7808 Cookham Manor, 7813 Freshford Manor, 7816 Frilsham Manor and 7817 Garsington Manor were allocated to Reading. Here they were used on station pilot duties at Reading General, on Thames Valley freights, and also on passenger services over Southern metals between Reading South, Guildford and Redhill. The Manors remained at Reading until August 1964 when no 7817 was withdrawn and the other three all moved away. Reading (81D) closed to steam in January 1965. However, Manors again returned to the Thames Valley with the allocation in late 1964 and early 1965 of no’s 7813, 7814, 7816 and 7829 to Didcot. All were by now in a rundown state. At Didcot they did not see much use but ex-Didcot fireman Bob Cottrell tells me that the principal Manor working at Didcot was the 2.50am freight service from Washwood Heath to Reading; at Reading it was then used on the 7.00am passenger service to Basingstoke before returning with the 09.45am goods from Basingstoke to Reading. The loco would then run light engine back to Didcot. Didcot closed to steam on Monday, 14 June 1965. On the previous day Sunday, 13 June the last Didcot Manor working took place when driver Alan Phillips and fireman John Brown worked no 7816 from Didcot to Oxford towing two withdrawn Hall Class 4-6-0s where they were deposited on the scrap line. No 7816 was then reallocated to Gloucester from where it was withdrawn on 18 November 1965. On 8 April 1963 no 7809 Childrey Manor was withdrawn from Shrewsbury, so by the end of 1963 the twenty-nine remaining Manors were distributed thus;
