The automatic gauge changing facilities are installed wherever the high speed lines interface with the rest of the railway network.

It has been reported that the whole of Spain’s 12 000 km of Iberian gauge railways (and presumably Portugal’s as well) will be converted to Standard gauge, and in fact some stretches of recently re-laid track in both Spain and Portugal do sport dual gauge fixings (there is sufficient space to permit three rails, although this might get tricky where it is necessary to maintain current loading gauge clearances, such as in tunnels). Some are even dual gauge already, such as the 5 km branch to Madrid’s Barajas Airport.
