Mrs. Lee’s dark purple PT Cruiser rolled up to a puttering idle by Ralph’s house. They were both in a state of paled shock and had not spoken a single word driving away from the nightmare at the high school. About five minutes passed before Mrs. Lee turned off the engine and folded her hands over her face. She rested her elbows on the steering wheel and wiped at her eyes before turning to face Ralph. Her head shook from side to side with mouth open slightly, but she said nothing. Ralph looked down at the crusty brown blood on his hands and on Bryen’s sweater and noticed he was still shaking as hard as he had been when he was being pummeled into the floor of the hallway. He wet his lips with his tongue in case he had to stretch them out to speak, unintentionally re-opening the gashes in them.

Ralph had been saved by the only other person who had ever really cared about him. He hadn’t wanted to acknowledge it before but as Mrs. Lee reached out to take his hand, he could not deny the warm truth. He suddenly felt guilty for turning away her compassion over the years. She had tried to be a friend to him when he didn’t have anyone, but he had always pushed her away. The regret he felt brought tears to his eyes.

“Ralph, I don’t know if I can let you go in there. I feel sick just thinking about it. I can give you a safe place to stay at my house in Lincoln—far away from here, until we can get something figured out for you. You don’t have to go back to all of this. I’m offering you a chance to escape, please come with me Ralph…”

Ralph bit down on his lip and ran his tongue over the pebble of blood. He had no idea what to say to her. His mind was racing with many different thoughts. He was grateful for the offer but his main focus was on Bryen. He couldn’t leave Bryen behind. If he left Nickel, he would be far away from him and might not see him again, especially with rising anger of the town. He might even be killed. If he stayed in Nickel, at least he would have a chance to stand by his side and fight with him until they could both escape.

“I… I can’t. There’s something I have to do,” he went to open the door but Mrs. Lee put a hand on his shoulder and dug a card and a pen out of her suit pocket.

“Wait Ralph, here’s my number. Call me if you change your mind at any time. I mean that. I will come get you.”

She handed him the card and he tucked it into the pocket of his jeans.

Ralph managed to share a smile, relieved that Mrs. Lee would finally be escaping her own prison in the town. But he had a horrible, sinking feeling that his own terror was just beginning.
