Chapter 11
“Hey! Somebody let me out of here!”
Kelly pushed on the opener again. The door didn’t move.
That didn’t make sense. The freezer didn’t have a lock on it, and it had openers on the inside as well as the outside of the door.
Kelly put the box of meat on the floor and threw all of her weight against the door again. She could see the latch moving, but the door didn’t budge.
Jeremy must have shoved something heavy in front of the door.
She shivered in the cold.
“Hey! Jeremy, let me out of here!”
She banged on the door.
“Hey! I’m going to freeze to death!”
Of course, that may very well be what he had in mind. Kelly was hoping someone else would hear and open the door.
The cold was getting almost unbearable now. The temperature outside was an Indian summer sixty degrees, so she was wearing only a cotton skirt and blouse under her work smock. She jumped up and down and rubbed her arms, trying to keep warm.
“Jeremy, everybody will know you locked me in here!” she yelled. She banged again on the door with her fist.
The freezer door was so thick and the fans circulating the frigid air so noisy, that she couldn’t hear anything outside the freezer. She wondered how much of her screaming could be heard on the other side.
“Jeremy!” she screamed, pounding the door. “Jeremy!
Kelly glanced at her watch. Two minutes had gone by since Ron called her upstairs. Surely, he would notice soon that she hadn’t returned. Mrs. Rawlings must be standing just outside his office waiting for the box of meat. Ron was a good businessman, and he stressed to his employees that service was an important part of the job. In a few minutes he would, himself, come to find out why the meat had not been delivered to the front of the store.
“Hey! Somebody let me out of here!”
Then, through the thick walls of the freezer, she heard a very faint noise, a soft scraping sound.
The door of the freezer was flung open.
And there stood Jeremy Watts. He frowned, but there was a little smile at the corners of his mouth as if he couldn’t quite mask his true feelings.
“What are you doing in there?”
Ron walked up behind him as she rushed out of the frigid air.
“Kelly, what’s keeping you? Mrs. Rawlings has been waiting for nearly five minutes!”
“Somebody locked me in the freezer,” Kelly said, staring straight at Jeremy.
“What are you talking about?” Ron said. “There’s no lock on the freezer.”
“I couldn’t get out,” Kelly said, still trembling with the cold. “I yelled and yelled and banged on the door.”
“I heard the banging,” Jeremy said, “when I came back here to use the bathroom.”
“Somebody put something very heavy in front of the door,” Kelly said. “I couldn’t push it open.”
Ron looked around him. There were shelves of grocery items surrounding them, but there was nothing large and heavy enough to block the freezer door.
“Maybe the latch stuck,” he said. “I’ll have someone come and look—”
“The latch didn’t stick!” Kelly interrupted emphatically.
