Chapter 14

Henry busted up laughing as we walked back to the house. I still wanted to hurt him. Once we were sure they weren’t following us, I said, “I can’t believe they didn’t call you on that game.”

She laughed, her tense shoulders relaxing. “Right? I mean, they didn’t even question my veracity.”

We all laughed anew.

“They were mesmerized by you. No brain power. It was crazy to see,” Henry said.

She raised one eyebrow at him. “And who also loses brain power every time a certain girl’s name is said?”

Henry hung his head.

“Y’all, there wasn’t a windshield receipt for time around my dad’s death, but there was one from twenty years ago. So, unless they threw that receipt away to hide their guilt, it looks like Harrises are clean.”

“We can’t count them out just yet,” Amanda said. “Maybe they threw the receipt away, knowing it incriminated them.”

She was right, of course.

“The truck does have front end damage. A lot of it.” I readjusted my towel over my shoulder.

“Did they say your dad was most likely hit by a car or a truck?” Henry asked.

I shook my head. “No idea.”

“We need to get the pics from your phone onto the computer so we can see what’s on those statements.”

“I know it was Harris, I can feel it in my gut,” I said. “We just have to find a way to prove it now.”

I felt conflicted. I should have been able to look at that evidence at the police station at my leisure. After all, it was about my dad. I really wanted to look at the evidence with Bud. I hated that I couldn’t fully trust him.

By the time we made it back to my house for a late supper, we were tired and starving. Mama had fried some fish, hushpuppies, black-eyed peas, and green beans with fried onions. I could smell cherry cobbler baking in the oven. When she pulled it out after we’d eaten, she sent us with a pan to take to Henry’s. We were so tired, we all fell asleep watching a movie in his great room.

I woke at one, alone on the couch. Amanda and Henry must’ve gone to their bedrooms. I thought about staying, just so I could wake up to Amanda and see her beautiful face first thing, but I needed time in the morning to get the results from the prints I’d given the chief. I also needed to do my chores.
