CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

She decided to take a lap around the mansion and stretch her legs. She walked as if in a daze. Never had she felt so free to do whatever she wanted. This contrasted with the mentality of everyone around her.

Wounded angel guards did warmup drills on the side lawn. Mini was helping to reinforce all the ground-level doors leading into the mansion while Ma worked on fortifying the windows with metal bars and pieces of wood with her wind magic. They both called out to her as she passed them, but she didn’t feel like talking to anyone so she kept walking as if she hadn’t heard them.

Why was everyone still trying to hold strong? What kind of false hope were they clinging to?

She focused on two angel medics carrying an injured angel guard on a gurney across the lawn. She waited for the Mantle to hiss a snide weakness to her, then she remembered that oh yeah, the Mantle was gone. The Corruptor was probably wearing it right now, evaluating the weaknesses of his lieutenants so he could weed out the failures.

Up there in his castle at the top of Rainwater, suspended over the trees like a threat. Maine stopped and glanced back at it. The castle’s highest tower appeared to be watching them, continuously sending the message that the demon would be coming for them. It was only a matter of time.

Really, what was the demon waiting for? He had all the power, held all the cards.

Cards…

Maine pulled Puck’s Wish Card from her purse. She couldn’t use it against the demon as long as he had at least one demon weapon on him. But she could use it to portal herself to Aruba.

The thought was so tempting.

However, something was keeping her here, on the mansion grounds.

She kept walking with her hands in her pockets. She absentmindedly fingered her mom’s wedding ring. It wasn’t long before she completed a lap around the mansion. Where to go now? If she went inside, she’d have to deal with Sage and Noff again. She’d have to see all the wounded inside, lying on their cots in the triage area. That would be a big downer.

She considered seeking out her uncle, seeing if he wanted to go to Aruba with her, but what Noff had said about him was true. He wielded the Clawhammer, and he wouldn’t ever run from a fight. He lived for fighting. Besides, if she told him she was going to run away, he’d probably scoff at her and tell her she was a disgrace to troll-kind and how her father would disapprove.

If she didn’t want to do another lap around the mansion, and she didn’t want to go inside it, what did that leave?

Her gaze trailed along the grounds, looking at the wanton destruction of the formerly pristine front lawn.

She saw the stable.

With a pep in her step, she headed toward it.

Surprisingly, she found it empty. None of the Guardian’s war council gathered around the big wooden table.
