Chapter Seven
Sheikh Hassan Turabi raced ahead of his men into the strongroom, his expression hot with anger. His fury rose when he found the room empty, but he relaxed when he inspected the door of the strongroom and found it secure and untouched. He gave a nod of satisfaction to his number two. “It is secure. You have done well.”
Abbas felt relieved. Ever since the shooting started, he’d been wracking his brains to work out if he’d locked the reinforced steel door, and he honestly couldn’t remember. He’d been meaning to come back and check, but when the bullets started flying, he had other, more important things to deal with. Like staying alive.
“Of course I made certain it was locked, my Sheikh. But where are the intruders?”
A man spotted the damage to the window and rushed a look outside. He turned in triumph. “They went this way! They climbed down the cable.”
“They got away? Someone will suffer for this, let me look.”
Turabi shoved men aside to reach the window. He inspected the damaged frame, pulled on the cable, and studied the ground below. “It is a long way down, and the cable is not long enough. They’d have fallen a long way.”
Abbas joined him and looked out. “A difficult drop, but there is no other way they could have got away. We must stop them before they escape from the compound.”
He nodded. “You men get outside and hunt them down. They must not escape.” He glanced around again and said a silent prayer of thanks. They’d come close to seizing the Lodestone, which would have meant losing him everything. The Palestinians were unhappy about taking orders from an Afghan, and all that convinced them was his possession of the relic. Men were still hesitating, and he raised his voice to a bellow, “Don’t just stand there! They almost stole your dream of taking back the land of Israel from the Jews. Move now, before it’s too late.”
There wasn’t a man in that room who hadn’t been raised to hate and despise the Jews, to regard the State of Israel as rightfully theirs. So far, every time they’d joined the other Arab nations to attack the hated enemy, somehow the Israelis always managed to win. Now it would be different. With the Lodestone, they would be the victors.
They raced out through the door, baying and growling like a pack of hunting dogs scenting their prey. The two Afghans watched them go, and Turabi nodded his approval.
“The Palestinians are fueled by a diet of intense hatred, and they will do whatever it takes.”
Abbas nodded, but he was still thanking his Guardian Angel he hadn’t left that door open. Even though he’d been convinced he had. In which case they could have lost everything, including his life.
“How are our preparations progressing, my Sheikh? Does this attack alter our plans?”
“Not at all. In a few days, the soldiers of Islam will pour across the border and follow the Lodestone into Israel. Nothing can stop them, and when we have beaten the Jews, it will be time for our real mission to begin.
