Chapter Seven
Private Chung Yeng felt confused and frightened. The American major had questioned him using an interpreter, and if he’d known the answers to any of his questions, he’d have told him. It soon became apparent he didn’t know, and the major got up, reassured him they wouldn’t have him shot, and left him alone in his cell. He could hear several military policemen in the outer office chatting to each other, but he hadn’t a clue what they were saying. He hadn’t yet told the Americans what he wanted. To go to America, and he’d have done anything to make it happen. He was still wondering how he could help them, give them any information that would earn him a ticket to the Promised Land, when he heard the outer door open, and a man was standing outside his cell. Through his cracked glasses he recognized the man who’d brought him back from China, and when the man smiled at him, he shivered. “Good news, Chinaman, we’ve decided to give you a break. You can go. You’re free.”
He had a limited command of English, and he under the word ‘free,’ an alien concept in his native China. His hopes rose and immediately sunk. He wasn’t such a fool he didn’t fail to miss the crooked expression on the face of his tormentor. Or was he mistaken? “Free?” It came out as ‘fwee.’ “Yeah, that’s right.” His lips twisted in a sneer, “Fwee. You can go home to China.” “America,” he pleaded, “Not China.” Reynolds shrugged. “You want to go to America? Fine, we can arrange that.” He opened the cell door wide, “You can come out now. You’re safe.” “Safe? I don’t understand.” He muttered a string of curses. “Why the fuck don’t you slopes talk English?” He beckoned to him, “Come on out. You’re free to go. Fwee, get it?” “Fwee. Yes?” “Yes, come on out.” The bemused Chinese soldier stepped out of the cell and followed Reynolds into the front office. He immediately felt uneasy. A bunch of MPs were staring at him, and they didn’t look friendly. What did they remind him of? His parents had taken him to Beijing Zoo when he was ten-years-old, and he recalled the big cats, tigers, leopards, lions. Apex predators, and that was the look thy adopted when the keepers arrived to toss in hunks of raw meat for their meal. The eyes wide, pupils dilated, mouth slightly open, and the staring. He fought back a shiver as he began to understand the truth. These men weren’t about to set him free. Nor would they allow him to return to China, or travel to America. They were going to kill him. Reynolds stood beside the outer door and gestured to Chung Yeng to leave the building. “Go on, you can go.” “Where I go?” “Outside is the main gate. Walk through the gate, and you’re outside the base. We have a jeep ready to take you to Kabul International Airport. The ticket will be waiting for you once you’re inside, and you’re on your way to the States.
