Before he reached the door, it slammed open, and Sean Kennedy filled the entrance. “She’s gone!” “Gone? Who’s gone?” “Lena. Lena Habibi. She was staying with Rona, and she’s gone. The Colonel and his wife went looking for her, but she’s disappeared. It’s like she vanished into thin air.” “There has to be a reasonable explanation. Maybe she went to visit someone else, or she’s doing some shopping.” He snorted. “After what she’s been through, she wouldn’t just disappear. It doesn’t make any sense. We need to go looking for her.” He frowned. “Sean, you’re not going looking for anyone. You’re confined base, or did you forget? Captain Cash and Nathan Buck aren’t allowed past the perimeter fence either, and as for me, they don’t even want me to leave this room.” His eyes narrowed. “If you can’t leave this room, why are you dressed?” Grant smiled. “Okay, guilty as charged, but I wasn’t about to escape, if that’s what you think. I was going for a walk and get some fresh air. Matter of fact, why don’t we do that now? It’s difficult to talk inside this place.” He nodded, and they walked out the door, straight into the arms of Lucy Walker. “Jack Grant, what do you think you’re doing? You’re supposed to be in bed.” “Me and Sean were stepping out for a stroll. Honestly, Lucy, that’s all it was.” “In that case, I’ll come with you. I don’t trust you, Jack. Every time you and Sean get together you seem to be cooking up trouble.” “How can you say that?” She grimaced. “Experience, that’s how.” They walked outside, and for the first time in days, he was able to smell the fresh air. Or at least, what passed as fresh air, tainted with the stink of oil and kerosene. Sean explained about Lena, and Lucy was immediately concerned. “If she is missing, Colonel Tarzi should report it to the police. They’re the people to deal with it, and besides, you’re not allowed off base. Nor me, so this time you’ll have to leave it to the proper authorities.” “The Afghan police?” Kennedy squinted at her, “I wouldn’t trust them to find a whore in a brothel.” “I wouldn’t have put it quite that way, but I agree, they’re not the most efficient organization in this part of Asia. Leave it to Colonel Tarzi to handle. She’s his sister-in-law. There’s nothing you can do, nothing any of us can do.” Sean hung back as Grant and Lucy strolled around in the open, staying close to the hospital. They were about to go back in when Kennedy’s cellphone rang. He spoke for a couple of minutes and ended the call. His face was like thunder. “Rona just called back. Tarzi contacted the police about Lena, and they’d had a report of a kidnapping. Someone took her.” He was agitated, about to explode into action, and Grant put a hand on his shoulder to remind him not to do anything stupid.
