Braxton and I thank you for taking leave of your tent and showing us your hospitality as we drove you yesterday. It was as comfortable as any with which our own young country has seen fit to provide us during this campaign.

Your people deserve credit. When we stopped last night, I was sure Sam was firing off those guns of his to give your boys a chance to cross the river and escape. Frankly, had I thought that we were going to go at it again today, I’d have done things differently.

We’re headed back to Corinth, to prepare to whip you fellows when you get there, worse than we gave you yesterday. We should be pretty well reenforced by the time you arrive and we’ll pick up where we left off. In the meantime, don’t let those scurvy newspaper dogs treat you as badly as they have: Braxton and I don’t think you’re crazy at all. And give our regards to Sam, who is the talk of our camp, that is, when we’re not talking about you.
