Chapter Seven
After another week in the hospital, Ben was released to go home. Grady had brought over clothing so that he could stay near Ben while he recovered. After a couple days he began to notice Ben becoming less talkative and more drawn into himself. By the fifth day Grady was worried; it was after one in the afternoon and Ben hadnât even gotten out of bed.
Grady walked into the master bedroom to find Ben sitting up in a chair looking out the large window into the backyard. He hadnât come out of his room when he woke up. This was getting out of hand. Grady sat in the chair opposite Ben and reached for his loverâs hand. Ben never turned his head, his gaze locked on the backyard.
âBabe, you have to tell me whatâs wrong.â Grady kept his voice even, though he wanted to scream his frustrations.
âWill you ever forgive me?â Ben asked, his voice monotone.
And there it was, the one conversation Grady had been avoiding since theyâd come home to Benâs house. Heâd already forgiven him for keeping the information about their stalker, which explained why Ben kept Grady a secret. But what about the date with Ryan? There was no reason Ben could give for going; that had been a betrayal Grady didnât know how to forgive.
âI donât want to talk about this, Ben,â Grady muttered, but even he could hear the anger in his voice.
âWhen? When will you want to talk about it?â
Grady stood and paced to the other side of the bedroom. Ben stayed seated and Grady figured that had to be the pain; Ben hadnât taken his medication yet. âI donât know when or even if Iâll ever want to talk about it.â
âSo youâre biding your time until Iâm healed to leave me,â Ben concluded.
âLeave you?â Grady asked. âI didnât say anything about that.â
âWell, it only stands to reason. You donât want to talk about it, and you canât forgive me. We canât build a relationship on that,â Ben explained. âIf thatâs the case Iâd prefer you go now before youâre hurt or worse. Thereâs no need to risk your life if you mean to leave me.â
It was like a sucker punch to the stomach. Was Grady simply helping Ben heal, then leave because forgiveness wasnât on the horizon? Grady wasnât consciously preparing for that inevitability, but he knew it could look that way.
Suck it up. If Ben wanted to hash this out now, it was on.
âYou intentionally cheated on me. How do you explain that? There isnât a logical reason to take some guy out and let him climb you like a tree in front of me.â
âI didnât have a choice. I had to make it look good for the stalker.â Benâs voice was calm but his eyes were turbulent.
âOh you made it look good all right. But ya know, you didnât have to cheat. You were keeping me at armâs length anyway. No one knew about us.â
âThe stalker seemed to. No matter how hard I tried to stay away from you, those damn pictures kept arriving.
