Chapter Seven

After another week in the hospital, Ben was released to go home. Grady had brought over clothing so that he could stay near Ben while he recovered. After a couple days he began to notice Ben becoming less talkative and more drawn into himself. By the fifth day Grady was worried; it was after one in the afternoon and Ben hadn’t even gotten out of bed.

Grady walked into the master bedroom to find Ben sitting up in a chair looking out the large window into the backyard. He hadn’t come out of his room when he woke up. This was getting out of hand. Grady sat in the chair opposite Ben and reached for his lover’s hand. Ben never turned his head, his gaze locked on the backyard.

“Babe, you have to tell me what’s wrong.” Grady kept his voice even, though he wanted to scream his frustrations.

“Will you ever forgive me?” Ben asked, his voice monotone.

And there it was, the one conversation Grady had been avoiding since they’d come home to Ben’s house. He’d already forgiven him for keeping the information about their stalker, which explained why Ben kept Grady a secret. But what about the date with Ryan? There was no reason Ben could give for going; that had been a betrayal Grady didn’t know how to forgive.

“I don’t want to talk about this, Ben,” Grady muttered, but even he could hear the anger in his voice.

“When? When will you want to talk about it?”

Grady stood and paced to the other side of the bedroom. Ben stayed seated and Grady figured that had to be the pain; Ben hadn’t taken his medication yet. “I don’t know when or even if I’ll ever want to talk about it.”

“So you’re biding your time until I’m healed to leave me,” Ben concluded.

“Leave you?” Grady asked. “I didn’t say anything about that.”

“Well, it only stands to reason. You don’t want to talk about it, and you can’t forgive me. We can’t build a relationship on that,” Ben explained. “If that’s the case I’d prefer you go now before you’re hurt or worse. There’s no need to risk your life if you mean to leave me.”

It was like a sucker punch to the stomach. Was Grady simply helping Ben heal, then leave because forgiveness wasn’t on the horizon? Grady wasn’t consciously preparing for that inevitability, but he knew it could look that way.

Suck it up. If Ben wanted to hash this out now, it was on.

“You intentionally cheated on me. How do you explain that? There isn’t a logical reason to take some guy out and let him climb you like a tree in front of me.”

“I didn’t have a choice. I had to make it look good for the stalker.” Ben’s voice was calm but his eyes were turbulent.

“Oh you made it look good all right. But ya know, you didn’t have to cheat. You were keeping me at arm’s length anyway. No one knew about us.”

“The stalker seemed to. No matter how hard I tried to stay away from you, those damn pictures kept arriving.
