1. Older translations of Dort have “affection” instead of “emotion,” which is a less common word to us but technically more precise. Affections were understood as inclinations and dispositions, not emotional states that passively rush over us.

2. “Common grace” is the phrase used in the Rejection of Errors. More recent notions of common grace (from Abraham Kuyper and his followers) should not automatically be read into Dort’s language. Dort uses the phrase as a synonym for “light of nature.”
