SCOTTIE DOG

“Any idea where this Russian peninsula is?” I asked Lock, who was now sitting up front with me. He had a map in his hands and was trying to figure that out.

“Fuck, everything’s in Russian. I don’t know where the fuck we’re going.”

“Fox!” I shouted over my shoulder. I heard him ambling toward the front of the plane, and then he appeared in the doorway, eating another fucking bag of Funyuns. “Did you know there are other snacks available? Ones with more nutritional value?”

His head bobbed up and down. “Your point?”

“That shit is disgusting.”

“This is the breakfast of champions.” He licked his fingers, sucking on them just a tad too hard for comfort. “I always feel better when I eat these right before a kill.”

I rubbed a hand over my eyes. “I know I’m going to regret this, but why?”

“Well, A—they have a kind of flavorful kick that gets me pumped up. And two—it’s in the name. Funyun. They’re fun, and when do I have fun?”

“When you’re killing people,” I answered.

“So, you see why it’s hard for me to switch.”

“Of course. We wouldn’t want to take away your killing power.”

He laughed, slapping me on the shoulder. “Scottie Dog, they don’t actually give me power. It just fuels my body. Man, you’re crazy,” he laughed as he started walking away.

“Hey! I called you up here for a reason!”

He hurried back, popping his head in the cockpit. “Yeah, Captain?”

I rolled my eyes at his ridiculousness. “Can you wake up the Russians so we know where the fuck to go?”

“Sure thing. Do you want me to wake them gently or with a little flare?” His eyes lit at the second suggestion, leaving me feeling a little queasy.

“How about you just be nice about it. We don’t want them to crash us into the ocean.”

He snapped his fingers at me with a nod. “Gotcha, boss.”

“I’m not your boss,” I shouted over my shoulder.

Lock was suspiciously silent in the copilot’s seat. I glanced over at him, wondering what was wrong, aside from the obvious. “What’s on your mind?”

He shook his head slightly and went back to studying the map. “The landing.”

“How bad can it be?”

He slowly turned to me, his eyes narrowed in anger. “We’re in a Russian plane that you don’t know how to fly, with controls all written in a language we don’t speak. We don’t even know if there’s a fucking runway where we’re supposed to land, and you wonder what could possibly be so bad?”

I shrugged. “I prefer to take my crisises one at a time. Right now, we’re in the sky, and as far as I know, no one’s trying to kill us.”

“Not yet,” he pointed out. “We have no way of knowing what’s waiting on the ground for us.”

Fox came back into the cockpit, dragging a staggering Sasha with him. He didn’t look altogether with it, and that didn’t give me a lot of faith that he could help me land the plane.

“Sasha, how are you?” Lock asked.

“My head is fuzzy.
