#FatalFinale

Marta rummaged quickly through the remnants of the old diner’s kitchen, hoping to find something edible. The encounter moments before had left her shaken, but unscathed. Every few seconds her eyes involuntarily darted back to the dark heap that lay lifeless on the floor where her attacker had once stood, scanning for any sign of movement. Little Hector was beside her now, his hand holding tightly to her shirt. She knew that they needed food soon, and it was up to her to find it. Scattered, empty boxes and broken dishes littered the floor. Finally, in a metal cupboard that had been hidden behind a collapsed section of the wall, she found her prize—a small stash of canned fruit that had been missed by the previous scavengers who had raided the diner for supplies. She cleared away the debris from a corner of the diner’s main eatery and set out their feast. The yellow beams of light filtering through the dusty windows had begun to turn orange as the sun sank lower in the sky. Without a sound, her little brother shoveled the treasure into his mouth. She had never seen him this hungry, and it was good to finally be able to watch him eat.

Suddenly, his head snapped up in alarm, his eyes wide with fear. “Look!” he choked, his cheeks still stuffed with the peaches he’d been devouring seconds before. There in the street, a black silhouette skittered through the long shadows of dusk. It was not alone. Another emerged from its hiding place briefly, before disappearing into the darkness of an alleyway just across the street. As Marta watched, a great wave of dread washed over her. She realized they were surrounded by not one or two, but hundreds of the same type of foul creature that they had been rescued from earlier. There was no escape this time. A loud shriek jarred her back to her senses. It was her little brother, but this was no cry of terror. He was cheering and pointing at a blur of light in the street. Their savior had returned! Dark fiends converged on their would-be rescuer like hungry wolves. Flashes of light erupted from the writhing mass of chaos. Black husks were sent hurtling through the air, but for every monster that the hero slew, three more joined the fray. In one final, brilliant explosion, the mass of dark hunters went flying back from the force of the blast. When the dust cleared, Marta lifted her head to survey the wreckage. There in the street lay their hope, their hero, dead. The stunned creatures re-gathered themselves and converged on the body with renewed ferocity.

End scene.

Credits roll.

Worst. Rescue. Ever.

What producer of a superhero blockbuster in their right mind would end a movie like that? The hero can’t die! What about the rescue plan? What about the hope and salvation of the world? I’m sure that the disciples of Christ had similar questions as they stood looking at the torn, bloody, and battered corpse of the Man they thought was their Messiah.
