Abrams’s aunt paid $2,450 for the abortion, in cash, and helped the girl to the car. Shay Abrams was in tremendous pain. When they got home to Chester, she became very ill.

“In the next couple days . . . I started bleeding really heavy, and I was real sick to my stomach,” she testified. “It was to the point where I was, like, crawling around, and I was throwing up like every five to ten minutes. . . .”

Abrams went to see her primary care doctor, who took cultures and advised Abrams to go back to Gosnell as soon as possible. Gosnell also took cultures, but he never got in touch with her about her test results. Very quickly, her own doctor phoned and told her to go to Crozer-Chester Medical Center right away.

Doctors at Crozer discovered that Shay had an abscess the size of a grapefruit and a blood clot in her heart. She spent two weeks in the hospital.

Shay Abrams’s health has never been the same. She suffers from shortness of breath and is constantly stressed. She became pregnant again, and her new pregnancy was deemed “high risk” following the abortion. Abrams’s son has health problems, including a compromised immune system. She says she can’t stop thinking of the abortion, and how it could have killed her and left her daughter without a mother. “Just knowing that, today, I wouldn’t be able to be here for my daughter and I wouldn’t have my son.”

In his defense of Gosnell, Jack McMahon introduced reams of consent forms that Abrams had signed at the clinics in Delaware and Pennsylvania, showing she had given consent to the procedure. One form also indicated she had consented to be given Digoxin, which, if administered properly, would kill the baby in her womb.

“You agreed to an injection, a needle that would kill the baby inside your uterus; correct?” McMahon asked.

“Yes.”

“And you agreed to that and a needle was given to you; right?”

“Yes.”

“And as this says,” he asked, holding up one of the forms, “that will make the baby not viable, correct?”

“Yes.”

“No further questions.”

But there was a big problem with McMahon’s defense. As Gosnell injected Abrams, he didn’t do another ultrasound. Normally, abortion doctors will use the ultrasound to make sure they inject the fatal drug directly into the heart of the fetus. When the Digoxin is injected correctly, the baby should be guaranteed to die. But without an ultrasound, it’s practically impossible to ensure the baby’s heart has been pierced.

And Abrams was confused. She couldn’t say for certain whether the Digoxin injection was to her abdomen or her cervix. But she was very clear on two other details: the injection was given without the use of an ultrasound; and the baby didn’t die. Baby Boy A was indeed alive. He was moving long after Shay was given the injection.

The life of Baby Boy A was short and violent. But even though he lived for just twenty minutes after he had been born, his brief struggle for life had a meaning and a purpose.
