CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Clean up 2

The next morning Steve hurried off to his meeting, but not before a quick round of morning sex. I picked up the condom wrappers that littered my bedroom and finished cleaning. I couldn’t get pregnant, or catch any diseases, but I still had appearances to keep up. I appreciated the fact that Steve was so concerned with safety. That would do him good in life. While Steve was working on my case with the list of missing items, I had a shop to take care of. After a quick shower, I walked to my business. The morning was cool and I’d be cleaning the mess of my shop, so I dressed accordingly in jeans and a black tank top, covered with a sweater for the morning chill.

Maggie was waiting for me outside the shop, with Mike at her side. She had her hair pulled into a neat ponytail and was wearing an outfit similar to my own, down to the black tank top. “Did you two plan your outfits again?” Mike asked, eyeing me up and down.

“I didn’t know your husband was such a comedian,” I said dryly.

He ignored my remark much like I ignored his. “Baby, call me as soon as you need me to pick you up.”

“I’m fine,” she snapped. “If you left me the truck, I could drive myself home.”

I moved away from them and opened the shop. The last thing I needed was to hear more of their arguing. It didn’t last long as Maggie followed me into the shop moments later. “Sorry about that,” she said as she tossed her purse in the corner. “I’m just so sick of being treated like I’m this helpless little kitten. Did you hear him call me “baby”? Am I a little child? I am not his darn baby. I’m not. I’m a grown woman, dang it.”

“He’s just scared and overprotective.”

“You got that right! Wait, scared? Mike’s not scared of anything.”

“He’s scared of losing you.”

Her head dropped and she fiddled with her short fingernails. “I know,” she said softly. “I can’t fix the fact that I’m human, or that he’s a werewolf, or that this world is crazy. What can I do?”

“Learn to defend yourself however you can. As for Mike, he’s just going to have to come to grips with things on his own.”

“I read through that last book you gave me,” she said, perking up. She hurried over to the purse and pulled out the book. “I even marked a few things I’d like to try, if you’ll help me. Maybe after we’ve cleaned up this mess.”

“Sounds like a good idea. As we clean, we’ll do inventory so we can tell the police what’s missing.”

We cleaned and worked tidying up the shop. Theda and Amy had stolen almost ten thousand dollars worth of inventory. I’d have to be more careful with my stock in the future. From now on, everything not on the shelf was under wards. Maggie walked down the street to pick up our lunch while I put in orders for supplies.
