Mailhot was not drafted out of juniors so he entered the world of senior hockey and started to forge his reputation in the now defunct Republican League, where he racked up 760 penalty minutes in 140 games during the mid–1980s. He was such an intimidating force that one of his teammates, Serge Bernier, who had retired from a lengthy pro career in the WHA and NHL, encouraged him to send resumes out to NHL teams. He received many responses, but because he couldn’t speak English very well he chose to pursue a spot on the hometown Quebec Nordiques.

Mailhot: “At my first day of rookie camp the newspaper guys are looking at my skating ability, seeing me as a local kid looking for a dream shot, that sort of thing. Even my dad told me to just have fun. Nobody gave me a chance. I was the only one who believed I could make it.
