A few moments before I was scheduled to speak, Trudy called my room to say that my appearance had been moved from the Lake Erie Room to the Lake Superior Ballroom. There were tons of alumni, she said—and some reporters too. There’d been some late long-distance debate about whether an alumni gathering should be open to the press. Clearly, it had never come up before. After a good deal of chat, the why-get-into-a-pissing-contest-with-a-skunk school of thought prevailed and freedom of the press was served. When I arrived, I was greeted by the college damage control team, Jeremy Collinsworth and—I had to laugh—Willard Thrush. “Are you the truth squad that follows me on the campaign trail?” I asked Thrush. “Pissing contest with a skunk” had to be from him.

“We just wanted to see for ourselves,” Collinsworth volunteered. “Not trust the newspapers.”

“They were accurate,” I assured him. “I was not misquoted.”

“Our concerns go a little deeper than that,” said Collinsworth.

“I suppose they do. So do mine.”
