White follows black as dawn does the night. But dawn does not always bring enlightenment. Oh, for luminous shades of gray. To the north of the snaking path, Al and Cal spied another group of humans gathered in sodality. Ursula had already noticed. And this was what those humans said: “Last week, before this rally, when I went to get the permit, I talked to a black police chief, and he said, ‘Now, David, I don’t want to hear the word nigger.’ Well, Lieutenant Cobey, hear this: Nigger, nigger, nigger, nigger!”

“Nig-ger! Nig-ger! Nig-ger! Nig-ger!” echoed the flock.

“More democracy in America,” Alan observed. “Care to play de Tocqueville with me?”

“You won’t believe this, Alan, but we’re still not packed. We have to get up at four to get to Kennedy by six.”

“We’ll be back first of August.”

“Have a great trip,” Alan said. “I hope you find your zayda and your zayda’s zayda.”

“Thanks.”

“Alan?” Ursula pleaded. “Try to stay out of trouble?”

“Would it matter?”

“Of course.”

Calvin’s not so bad, Alan thought. I see what she likes in him.

As he watched them head off for the subway, a familiar name struck his ear.

“Aristotle, the great Greek philosopher, said that “just as some are by nature free, so others are by nature slaves.”

A seminar in Aristotle. Free! Isn’t America wonderful? Let us approach.

“White Power! White Power!”

But maybe not too close.

A bald young man in black leather sprang up to the flag-adorned platform and took the mike.

“But in my mind, the real problem, the more basic problem is the Jew.”

Perhaps a few feet farther back might be appropriate. Well, there’s Officer Friendly. I’ll just keep him in sight. Doesn’t look as if he’s going anywhere. He must be interested in basics too.

“All the real leaders of the NAACP were Jews. The so-called black civil rights leaders were financed, advised, or led by Jews.”

“Martin Lucifer Coon!”

“Now a lot of people say, ‘Let’s go out and get a nigger.’ But I say leave the niggers alone. Without Jewish control and Jewish leadership, niggers wouldn’t go no where. And not because they’re stupid or illiterate, because they’re not. But without Jewish money power, the black movement wouldn’t go anywhere.”

A woman’s voice from the crowd: “The bulk of Jews are very neurotic, psychotic people.”

Alan clapped internally.

“I’m not saying all Jews. I know a lot of Jews, I’ve worked for Jews who treated me great. But I’ve studied the idea why Jews are so attracted to the Hitler thing. I think Jews have this love-hate relationship with Nazis, and now they are using the same stuff in Israel that’s a copycat of the SS, and I just think there’s some kind of neurosis that is catching.”

“Jews are not Caucasians as far as I’m concerned.”

“More lampshades!”

Lampshades again? Fuck! Unplug the electricity! Maybe I should buy stock in a Lampshades R Us—we could advertise in Ebony and Reader’s Digest.

Another skinhead, bigger, fatter, joined his colleague on the platform.
