Chapter Sixteen
Gareth glanced down at the piece of paper in his hands. It was the receipt from the guildhall, a slip confirming what quest he had been given. He had flipped it over, his skills detecting his intentions and sketching a map of the city out as he walked. It was smaller than Gareth would have liked, though that was likely down to the size of paper he had chosen. Mapping everything for a milot around him was creating a surprising amount of information to be etched out into ink summoned from nothing.
The surprising part was how the map had taken the time to label everything. Street names ran along their lengths whilst the names of shops and landmarks were emblazoned on the scratchy squares that denoted their presence. Something in the back of Garethâs mind told him that his translation ability wasnât needed. Everything he read appeared to him as English, Magdaâs gift changing his perception so he could understand it, but here it wasnât necessary, the effect only noticeable thanks to its absence. It made senseâit was his skill after all so it writing in his native tongue was logical. That was a useful bonus, it meant his maps would be intelligible only to himself, his friends, and the people who had been tattooed at the tower. A little bit of information security never hurt.
He had followed the instructions from the guild clerk through the streets, her hastily scribbled directions clear enough. The end result wasnât quite what Gareth had expected. He assumed that a duke would live in a massive stately home, a manor surrounded by grand gardens and elegant fountains. The kind of place that needed something to drive from the gates to the actual entrance of a house. He wondered how the people who lived in those kinds of places coped. If you needed something on the other side of the house it was a fifteen-minute walk to get it. Maybe that was the secret to how celebrities stayed so trim, massive impractical houses forcing exercise onto them.
The house itself was a tall three-story thing with a white painted front, its doorway a deep red and flanked by chiselled columns. It was detached from other similar houses around it, though the gaps between them were less than a meter if that. Gareth realised that in itself was a display of ostentatious wealth. Every building in Thot-Ankor had been pressed up against at least one other, the space at an outrageous premium. The fact that the duke had been able to secure three entire stories to himself cut off from the dirt and grime around him spoke to his influence. Even the pristine gleam of the painted stone put his status on display, keeping the building that clean had to be an ongoing battle.
âNice house,â Magda said, shielding her eyes from the light bouncing off the brilliant walls. The sun was breaking through the smog cover above and dancing off the painted stone. âWell, compared to the houses Iâve seen so far.
