Heroic Journeys and Quests

At the center of most hero myths is the quest. Through the quest adventure, the hero proves his worth and “makes a name” for himself. The Celtic heroes of the Arthurian tradition in the British Isles are especially known for their quests, the most famous of which—involving such well-known heroic names as Gawain, Galahad, and Percival, and such hallowed places as the Chapel Perilous and castle of the fisher-king—are concerned with the mysterious Holy Grail. These quests will be discussed in detail later in connection with the Welsh sagas. But Germanic heroes are questors as well, and after the conversion to Christianity spiritual heroes such as saints had their own quests.
