“I WANT TO MAKE EVEN WITH THE CAPITALISTS BY KILLING THE PRESIDENT”: Diminutive and demented Giuseppe (“Joe”) Zangara in police custody, shortly after mortally wounding the mayor of Chicago and nearly murdering President-elect Franklin Roosevelt (February 15, 1933).

Within the span of fourteen months in the early 1930s, two bloody American encounters nearly killed both individuals most essential for the Allies to prevail in World War II.

Had either of the disconnected incidents produced different results, the impact would have been catastrophic. Instead, these close calls affirmed the old idea advanced by George Washington in his First Inaugural Address: that an “Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men” consistently protected and sustained the interests of the United States.
