Job Enjoys Countless Blessings

Some years later, God appointed Job as a prophet and messenger to the people of Bathnah and the neighboring town of Ḥawrān. Because of his outstanding character and gentle nature, and because of his and his father’s status, he was not opposed or repudiated by his people. He promulgated the law of Abraham and built houses of worship. He served food to the destitute and to the wayfarers. He was like a father to the orphans, a husband to the widows, and a guardian to the weak. Whenever he ate, he would eat with orphans or some other guests at his spread. 9 He instructed his agents not to bar anyone from his orchards and fields. He even extended his hospitality to the birds and the beasts whom he allowed to graze freely in his fields. Whenever he was faced with a choice between two good deeds, he chose the harder of the two. 10 For Job’s devotion and generosity, God rained down his blessings upon him more and more by the day and made his animals bear twins every year.

Despite God’s myriad blessings upon him, Job never exulted or felt conceit. Rather he would say, “Lord, if this world is like this, then how wonderful must your paradise be, for you have created it specially for those whom you wish to honor.” Decades passed until Job reached the age of seventy-three. 11
