Chapter Twelve

Brandon and I decide to head back to the lavender-grassed meadow Hermes had taken us to for Omedis practice. We retrace our steps through the tunnel until we find the passageway that leads to the training field.

As we head out along the purple gravel path that should lead us back there, I am struck by the eerie silence of this place. On our two trips outside Katie’s house we have not run into any other living soul, and we have not seen any evidence that outside of her house anyone else is alive. The stillness makes it feel like a lonely place and I am so glad to have Brandon by my side.

As we walk along, the silence is broken by a buzzing in my ear. I swat at it, thinking it must be a fly, although I haven’t seen any insects here yet. It buzzes by my face again and it seems awfully large. I wonder what kind of insect it is. I remember getting bit once by a horsefly and I don’t want to repeat that.

I duck my head and start to run ahead on the path to avoid it. I turn around to look for Brandon, and see that he is staying back and trying to catch the thing. With a quick snatch of his hand, Brandon captures it. His two hands encase it, the buzzing angrily increasing in volume at being trapped.

“Zoe, come back and look at this,” Brandon calls to me. I walk back to him and he opens his hands slightly so I can see what he has caught. It is a tiny flying vessel, about the size of a matchbox car. It looks to be a miniature drone. He opens his hand and the little aeronautic vehicle shoots out of his palm and flies away, like it was waiting for its chance for freedom. We watch the drone take a final circle of us, and then it speeds off out of sight.

“I think someone is spying on us,” Brandon says.

We look around and we don’t see anyone else. All we can see are miles and miles of lavender-grassed fields. The grass is very tall in places and it is possible that someone could be hiding in it. As I stare out into the landscape, I think I may see a sliver of movement rippling through a field.

“Do you see that, Brandon?” I say, pointing to the far-off field.

Brandon cranes his head to look to where I am pointing. The field is still now. Brandon shakes his head no. We continue walking when out of the corner of my eye I see the field ripple again.

“Did you see that?” I say to Brandon.

Brandon crosses his arms and trains his focus on the field. “Yeah, I did,” he says. He bites his lip and seems to be considering what to do. “Come, on, let’s keep walking,” he says.

It could have been an animal in the field and not a person. An animal could be worse.
