THE FLEXIBLE CARDINAL FAULHABER (OR, HOW TO SURVIVE FOR TWO THOUSAND YEARS)
“Cardinal Faulhaber was, so to speak, a duke in the great levy of German Catholics who repeatedly campaigned unflinchingly against Hitler and his cohorts.”
—Suffragan Bishop Johann Neuhäusler249
“There is something uncanny about people’s short memories. They can no longer remember after hardly three years. This book may remind such people with short memories about the reality of the past years.”
—Cardinal Faulhaber250
The great prince of the church, after whom streets and squares are named in Germany today, who once defamed the Weimar Republic as a product of “perjury and high treason”251 but guaranteed in a handwritten letter to Hitler in 1933 that this came from the bottom of his heart: “God preserve our Reich Chancellor for our people” (p. 107); who instructed the Bavarian Catholics in a pastoral letter in 1934: “The Church’s moral doctrine will benefit the state order as education for simplicity and loyalty to duty, a sense of community and spirit of sacrifice. On the other hand, our state authority has removed coarse negative developments in books and bathing, film and theater and other areas of public life and . . . also done the moral life of the people an inestimable service.”252 Cardinal Faulhaber, who gave his declaration, along with all the German bishops, on the referendum on March 29, 1936, in order to disperse any doubts of conscience among the Catholics, which had admittedly been a possibility, and “open up the path to a determined ‘Yes’”: “we give the Fatherland our vote, but that does not mean agreement to things that we would consider unconscionable. This declaration will suffice for all Catholics to vote ‘Yes’ with a clear conscience and the awareness of standing up before the whole world for the honor, freedom and safety of our German Fatherland in doing so”253—upon which, three years before the outbreak of the Second World War, Hitler received almost 44.5 million of the 45 million votes cast, as opposed to 17.25 million on March 5, 1933. Cardinal Faulhaber, who celebrated a thanksgiving service after the failed assassination attempt on Hitler in November 1939 and, directly after Stauffenberg’s assassination attempt on July 20, 1944(!), congratulated Hitler on his rescue both personally and in the name of his bishops and had a Te Deum sung in the Munich Frauenkirche.254 Hardly ten months later, on May 12, 1945, this same Faulhaber cursed the Hitler regime in front of American journalists in the most vehement way and concluded: “Nazism must not be revived.”255 Indeed, he did not hesitate to claim “after the end of the most terrible of all wars” with all the Bavarian bishops: “The German bishops, as you know, made serious warnings about the false doctrines and aberrations of National Socialism right from the very beginning and repeatedly pointed out . . .”256
Cardinal Faulhaber, who had already served Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm as deputy field provost and then actual field provost of the Bavarian army from 1914 to 1917; who called
